Midi Sequencer - Learn How To Create Your Own Tracks Correctly
The very first thing to understand about midi sequencers is that they create no sound of their own. Of course, some later hardware units include on board sounds that the sequencer will use, but when midi sequencers initially came into the market they had been a standalone application.
The sequencer's role is to capture, accurately, the digital midi events made by a midi keyboard or other sort of midi controller including a guitar to midi converter or Yamaha's EWI (a midi wind instrument).
Initially we'll take the example of a 4 piece band. If the musicians are amazing players and work nicely together, it's best to record them direct to tape or disk. What if they're not so terrific live but have lots of excellent suggestions?
Should they sink into the darkness just because they, so far, haven't developed their playing abilities to a high degree? I don't think so. And if it were the case, there could be a whole lot of music that would never have come to our attention.
Let's say the four piece band plays well, but the drummer's kit sounds like an accumulation of rubbish tins. We could have the band play live and "replace" the drum noises later (probably keeping the cymbals), or we could program a drum track with some terrific sounds and have the rock band follow the track.
Playing the notes into a midi track permits for much flexibility later at the mixing stage as notes can simply be shifted anywhere you desire, and sounds may be altered, to suit blending into the mix, or to be wildly different.
Looking at one more area - scoring music for film or television - we see midi has all but replaced regular orchestral recording.
Certainly absolutely nothing compares with a well recorded live orchestra but, as expenses skyrocket, only big budget movies are able to afford such productions leaving a lot of the production work these days to composers utilizing extremely huge midi systems.
A different area is the lone musician. This scenario is where one individual is composing and producing songs whereby he might compose the entire backing using midi instruments and then, possibly, record themselves singing and/or playing guitar along with the backing.
